Cigarettes and cigars may be extinguished automatically by means of one or more elements made of a thermal shape memory material that changes shape when heated by the nearby burning tip and thus smothers, dampens or disperses the burning tobacco. These devices are incorporated in or adjacent to the cigarette paper, incorporated in or adjacent to the filter, sold separately on a holder built in to the packaging, or pre-mounted on the cigarette or cigar. Said devices may be used by the tobacco industry to prevent accidental fires and harm to public health caused by smoke from burning cigarette filters. |
