The guard consists of an upper protection surface (3) and a lower protection surface (4) each extending from the two opposed edged of the feed opening (1) and each one covering a part of the latter. These protection surfaces (3,4) together cover completely the feed opening and form, if necessary, in co-operation with the reception hopper (2), a lead in passage of the grape harvest or similar material into the reception hopper (2) or the machine. The entry opening (5) is orientated in the direction of the feed or the source of the grape harvest or of similar material, to introduce into the hopper (2) or the machine, and so is on the opposite side to where stands the operator, who is feeding the machine with the grape harvest or similar material.
