An electronic device (12) is fitted with heat transfer apparatus (10) which consists of a heat spreader (30), heat sink (50), a pipe (170,180) coupled to the spreader and the heat sink, a valve (20) and control system, made up of a sensor and logic circuit (80) combination. The valve regulates the flow of heat transfer fluid along the heat pipe. The valve is controlled by an actuator (250) connected to the logic circuit, that detects changes in state using the sensor, and react accordingly. An Independent claim is included for a method of cooling an electronic device.
