A plastics tub (16) labelling assembly holds the tubs with their opening (52) over a supporting probe (18) which transports the tub past a label application station (30). Prior to labelling, the tubs are dropped onto the probe in free fall. The speed at which the probe advances is variable, and the time at which the tub is released is varied in accordance with the probe speed.
