PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix type display device enabling a two dimensional input system. SOLUTION: This active matrix display device is constituted of pixels 3 formed in a matrix shape by using one pair of substrates opposed with each other, the scanning lines provided corresponding to the rows of the pixels, the signal lines provided in accordance with columns of the pixels, a row driving circuit selecting pixels for every row by being connected to respective scanning lines, a signal processing circuit decoding picture signals which are preliminarily encoded by making a block with M rows×N columns (M and N are natural numbers equal to or larger than 2) a unit into picture signals corresponding to pixels with M rows×N columns and a column driving circuit writing pertinent picture signals to pixels of the selected row by being connected to respective signal lines. The signal processing circuit successively processes the picture signals which are decoded by making the block with M rows×N columns the unit of a block with m rows×n columns (m and n are natural numbers equal to or larger than 2) and supplies them to the column driving circuit. The row driving circuit simultaneously selects (m) lines of rows of the pixels and, on the other hand, the column driving circuit impresses en bloc the picture signals to signal lines belonging to (n) lines of columns and writes picture signals en bloc to pixels with m rows×n columns.
