A rung (1) which may be formed by folding sheet metal has ears at the rung ends which are forced into pairs of slots in the sides of the longitudinal ladder members. The slots are formed by stampings and the free ends of the stampings (22) engage with holes (13) in the rung sides to prevent disengagement. The rung load is taken by the slots but in case of failure a rim at the base of the longitudinal member offers support. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) the application of the ladders to cable ways and access to different levels; and (ii) production of the rungs.
