PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide facsimile equipment the reading section of which is detachably attached to the main body of the equipment and which does not hurt the hand of the user even when the user puts the hand in the equipment by mistake by eliminating such a wasteful operation that document feed rollers are unnecessarily rotationally drive. SOLUTION: The facsimile equipment judges whether or not a read mechanism section is detached from the main body (S85) and, when the mechanism is not detached ('NO' in S85), sets an automatic read mode and discriminates the presence/absence of a document (S87). When the document does not exist, the equipment outputs a warning sound (S89). When the document exists, the equipment discriminates whether or not a read starting switch is turned on (S91) and, when the switch is turned on, automatically receives the document by rotating a paper feed motor which feeds the document (S93). When the read mechanism section is detached from the main body ('YES' in S85), the facsimile equipment sets a manual read mode and judges whether or not the read starting switch is turned on (S103). When the switch it turned on, the equipment manually reads the document.
