PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain 3-carane epoxide useful as an intermediate for producing an active ingredient for insect pest repellents in a good yield by reacting 3- carene with peracetic acid. SOLUTION: 3-Carene of formula I (the flying wedge type display expresses a relative steric configuration) is reacted with peracetic acid in the presence of a sodium acetate at 0-50 deg.C for 1-48hr to produce a 3-carane epoxide of formula II. The sodium acetate and the peracetic acid are used in amounts of 0.5-2.5 moles and l-1.2 moles, respectively, per mole of the compound of formula I. The compound of formula II can be treated with an alkali metal hydroxide or alkali metal carbonate in a water-containing alcohol under pressurization to produce 3,4-caranediol which is useful as an active ingredient for pest repellents. |
