METHOD FOR GENETICALLY MODIFYING WOODY PLANTS BY USING CELLS WITH MERISTEMATIC CAPACITY

The present invention concerns a method for transformation of woody plants which comprises the following steps: (i) selection of explants to be transformed, (ii) removal of buds present in the explants, (iii) transformation of the material, (iv) development of the meristems, (v) selection of transformed shoots, which can be used for the introduction of specific genes which endow the transformed plant with useful features, such as genes for resistance to diseases, genes associated with productivity, with fruit quality, with organoleptic or nutritional properties, with tolerance to drought, salinity or other stresses, or any other feature or pertinent features. In reality any gene, derived from any organism, which can be introduced by means of the method as per the present invention and which can bring an improvement of any class to the existing germoplasm.
