A method for the preparation of spherical particles from a sludge (2) consisting of small solid particles dispersed in a liquid comprises dispensing the sludge down a tube and out through a nozzle (3) into a container (4) filled with a different liquid (5), so that the sludge is added to the liquid as drops (6). Sludge viscosity is relatively low and the sludge liquid phase and different liquid are immiscible, although the densities of the sludge and this liquid are identical or similar. The surfaces of the particles are unbroken and smooth, whilst surface tension between the sludge liquid phase and the different liquid causes the particles to adopt a spherical shape. These particles are collected from the container after a set period of time without them losing their spherical shape. |
