A metering unit for delivering measured quantities of a fluid e.g. a lubricant, comprises a housing 1 having an inlet 9 and an outlet 8, a piston 3 having a duct 11, a resilient means for biasing the piston away from the outlet and a valve member 6. A high pressure pulse in the fluid supplied to the inlet causes the valve member and the piston to be forced against bias of the resilient means (as shown the means is an annular 5) to eject fluid via the outlet and to permit fluid to flow into chamber 7 via a restricted gap between the valve member and wall 13. A subsequent low pressure pulse in the fluid supplied to the inlet allows, due to the differential pressures acting on the valve member, the valve member to move away from its engagement with the piston 3. Fluid in the chamber 7 is thus able to flow into the duct 11. The resilient annulus subsequently forces the piston to the illustrated position. The cycle is then repeated. The biasing means may be a spring. |
