An oil burner comprises a bowl 10 fed through apertures in its base with oil via pipes 16 and primary air through a tube 11 from a plenum chamber 12 below the bowl connected to the outlet of a compressor 30, Fig. 3 (not shown), a cover being provided above the bowl, the outer edge of which is spaced above the lip of the bowl. The bowl increases its diameter at about half its height forming a step 18, and pins 19 supporting the cover are mounted on or screwed into the step. Holes 23 formed in the wall of the bowl just above the step supply supplementary air. A heater wire 25 extends around the internal surface of the lower part of the bowl, from which it is insulated by pot insulators 27, and vaporizes and ignites the fuel oil. A spark ignitor may replace the heater wire. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), a hood 33 disposed around the outside of the bowl forms an annular chamber 34 through which air is directed to the supplementary air holes 23 from the plenum chamber 12 and atmosphere via holes 35 and 36 respectively. The burner may be used to heat a boiler in the form of a drum-shaped annular water tank 40, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), having upper and lower portion 41 and 42. The burner is disposed in a central hole 44 in the lower portion 42. The tank has radially extending outlet and inlet pipes 47, 48 spaced apart at the top and bottom of the tank respectively. Two banks of water tubes 49, 50 are disposed around the periphery of the space enclosed by the tank and extend between the top portion 41 and either the lower portion 42 or the side wall of the tank as shown. |
