Air filtering apparatus, for removing radioactive particles from air flowing along duct 2 comprises a cylindrical tube 3 intersecting duct 2 and having openings 4 aligned with the duct, and a filter element 5, 6 in the tube, making seals therewith along annular lips 8 and axial strips 10, the tube being long enough so that one filter element can be pushed into it and maintain a constant seal between duct 2 and the outside while an exhausted filter element is pushed into removable bucket 11, in which it is stored while the activity decays. As shown, the filter element proper 6 is hermetically sealed in a cylindrical cartridge 5, whose openings 9 align with openings 4. Alternatively, the element can be removably carried in a flat frame mounted axially of the tube between end washers. Cartridge 5 carries at one end bolts engageable with blind holes in the tube wall to locate the cartridge between openings 4. The bolts are releasable remotely and match recesses in the end of the next cartridge so that one cartridge can closely engage the next. |
