The current limiting switch, for ac and dc, has an unsaturated choke (L) in parallel with the capacitor (C) that shunts the main disconnector (S1). This LC parallel combination is connected across the disconnector by a fast switch (S2) (e.g. a thyristor). When the current passes through zero in the fast switch a damping resistor (R) is switched by a third switch (S4) in parallel with the LC circuit.
