A selector 21 acting on the butts 5 of needle jacks 4 is operated by a member which undergoes dimensional variation under electrical or magnetic influence. The member may have electric-strictive or piezo-electric properties. In Fig. 2 the selector 21 encompasses a metallic blade 14 sandwiched between the dimensionably variable members 13, 15. The sandwich is plane in the rest condition and an electrical impulse from a pattern will cause the sandwich to bow one way or the other to engage or miss a butt. In Figure 3 the piezo electric element 30 is sandwiched between a reaction mass 31 and a bracket 33 and forms a resonator acting on the selector 31 by way of a diaphragm 37. |
