Antimicrobial bromonitroalcohols.. M3A. Of formula (I): R is H, Me or halomethyl and R2 is H, Me, Et, hydroxymethyl or hydroxy ethyl) are prepared by the method of Bel. 736,205, in which the soln. or suspn. of the Mg or alkaline earth salt of the correspg. nitroalcohol (reaction of R1CHO, R2CH2NO2 and Mg or alkaline earth salt in aq. soln.) is added to the predetermined amount of Br2 at 0-20 degrees. pref. in an halogenated hydrocarbon, instead of the dropwise addn. of Br2 to the salt. - The present method avoids formation of undesirable by-products and loss of yield.
