An HF Maser, as in 1566036, has a synchronous HF square-wave potential applied across the electrodes so that the electron cloud is oscillated in synchronism with the frequency. One of the electrodes is a very thin foil. The square wave can be slightly asymmetrical, the longer positive wave being applied to this thin foil. The electrodes are accelerated through the foil in the quantity which corresponds to the increment by impact ionization and secondary electron emission.
