[Also in Division B3] A spring actuated clamping mechanism for a pallet 17 comprises a pair of axially movable clamping pins 19, 21 carried in a body which also carries a pair of plungers 27, 28 movable at right angles to the pins. Cam surfaces on the pins and plungers act to advance and retract the pins, and springs 43 urge the plungers towards a clamping position. An axially movable actuating rod 51 includes cam surfaces to move the plungers 27, 28 away from each other to retract the pins and compress the springs 43. The pallets 17 are moved along rails 59 by a reciprocating rod 14 having pins 13 which can be moved out of engagement with the pallet 17 for its return stroke, a pallet clamping mechanism is provided at each working station for clamping the pallet against the rails and a stop 24. Cam surfaces 35, 38 engage to quickly raise the pins and cam surfaces 34, 39 engage to clamp the pallet. Cam surfaces 36, 37 act to retract the pins when the plungers 27, 28 are forced apart against the springs 43 by cam surfaces 54 on the actuating rod 51. Rollers 48 on the ends of the plungers engage the cam surfaces in the actuating rod 51, but in the clamping position of the rod 51 the rollers 48 are free from the cam surfaces to allow the springs 43 to develop full clamping force on the pins. The clamping mechanisms are arranged in series with the actuating rods 51 acting on each other, and the series being actuated by rams (57), (58), (Fig. 1, not shown). The pin 21 includes a surface 25 which engages in the pallet to locate it, and pin 19 includes surface 23 for pushing the pallet sideways onto stop 24. |
