[Also in Division H4] In a data processing system, a selected table of information on a film strip is projected on to a television camera whose output controls a cathode-ray tube to display the selected table, detection of an operator's finger on one of a matrix of contacts superimposed on the C.R.T. face producing a code representing the position of the finger. This code, together with a code representing the identity of the table, is sent via a buffer store to a computer, passage to the computer from the buffer being dependent on a manual key. The position code also causes the item of information selected by the operator's finger in the table to be underlined on the C.R.T. display, for operator verification before pressing the manual key. In this way a quantity surveyor can enter the names of building materials into the computer. He can also enter quantities on a keyboard, and the computer will calculate the total quantities of the various constituents of the materials. A graticule unique to the selected table may be displayed on the C.R.T. under computer control to give the operator some assurance of absence of computer fault. Presence of the operator's finger referred to is detected by capacitive change causing imbalance in A.C. bridges. |
