Semi-bright nickel plate is cathodically deposited from an aqueous acid nickel electroplating bath containing as a semi-bright additive (a) an aldehyde R. CHO where R is an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl radical and (b) an acetylenic compound but excluding any haloalkyl aldehyde or any sulphonated aldehyde or any ester of a sulphocarboxylic acid with an acetylenically unsaturated alcohol or any salt of such an ester, the aldehyde (a) and acetylenic compound (b) each being soluble in the electro-plating bath in an amount of at least 10 mg/l. Preferably the additive is such as to provide in the bath 0À01 to 1 g/l of aldehyde and 0À01 to 0À2 g/l of the acetylenic compound. Numerous examples are given of both (a) and (b) and as a further semi-bright additive a w-sulphohydrocarbyloxy coumarin as in Specification 1,135,187 may also be included in the bath which typically is a Watts bath and may contain also piperonal. Specification 1,169, 559 is referred to and the baths may be employed to effect high speed electro-plating in a manner similar to that described therein. |
