[Also in Division F4] In apparatus for 'hot pressing materials by a fluid which acts as the heating and stressing medium, the material 30 is placed in a container 34 within a vertical tubular wall 50 spacedly mounted within a vertical, inverted ball 38, spacedly disposed, in turn, within a pressure vessel 10 of tubular form. The wall 50 is secured to the bell and has apertures 52, 54 adjacent the upper and lower ends to allow continuous recycling flow of the heating fluid through the passageways on opposite sides of the wall 50 and the bell side wall 42 acts as a heat sink to cause the cooled fluid to flow downwardly to a lower, electrical heating element 24 beneath the material container. The bell side wall 42 may act as a heat exchanger 55 utilising a gaseous or liquid heat exchange medium to enhance cooling of the fluid. The fluid is preferably an inert gas e.g. helium or argon, introduced into the treatment zone via a conduit 62 and temperatures and pressures of 2000‹C and 3000 atmospheres are described in order to deform plastically and promote solid state diffusion bonding and/or to produce sintering and densification to theoretical densities of the material. The materials may be pre-shaped or formed e.g. particulate or solid metals, alloys, ceramics, graphites, carbides, or mixtures and/or layers of these materials.
