1364795 Fuel cells L NANIS 16 May 1972 23035/72 Heading H1B The anode 2 and cathode 3 in respective electrolyte compartments formed by a permeable barrier 11 are immersed in foam layers 14, 15 formed by adding a foaming agent to the electrolyte 12, 13, the electrolyte being initially agitated, if desired, to generate the foam. The foam layers 14, 15 are maintained by the fuel, e.g. hydrogen, suppled at 7 and the oxidant, e.g. oxygen, supplied at 8. The action of the foam bubbles on the electrodes 2, 3 improves the rate of reaction at the interface between the electrodes, electrolyte and fuel or oxidant. As shown, the electrodes are smooth sheets of platinum. The electrolyte may be H 2 SO 4 or KOH. The Specification describes three specific foaming agents. In a modification (not shown) the electrodes are of spiral shape. |
