1359947 Ethylene-but-1-ene copolymers NATIONAL PETRO-CHEMICALS CORP 25 July 1972 [27 July 1971] 34808/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] A polymerization process comprises copolymerizing ethylene and but-1-ene in a liquid diluent in a polymerization reactor, recovering the copolymer and a recycle mixture containing diluent and unreacted but-1-ene, isomerizing some of the but-1-ene in the recycle mixture to but-2-ene and returning the resulting mixture to the polymerization reactor and employing it therein in the formation of an ethylene polymer substantially zero but-1-ene content or of an ethylene-but-1-ene copolymer having a lower but-1-ene content. The polymerization may be carried out within a smooth continuous path reaction zone at temperatures and pressures such that substantially all of the diluent is in the liquid phase and the polymers produced are in the form of solid particles slurried therein. The but-1-ene may be isomerized in the presence of an isomerization catalyst (e.g. molecular sieves or alumina and oxides of Si, B, Zr or Th). The but-1-ene may be formed in situ by the dimerization of ethylene using, e.g. T 1 tetraoctylate or tetrahexylate. In the example the polymerization catalyst is a chloride of T 1 supported on MgO and triethylaluminium, the diluent is isobutane and hydrogen is fed to the polymerization reactor.
|
