Waste heat utilisation by soil heating - using superimposed pipe systems to wet soil and give off coolant heat simultaneously

Waste heat from reactor coolant etc. can be utilised to heat the soil by passing hot coolant through a buried pipe system which gives off the heat to the surrounding soil. The soil surrounding the coolant pipe system is connected to a second network of pipes above the coolant system and thus wetted with part of the cooling water etc. The water pressure in this superposed network should be regulated to suit weather and general requirements. Two pipes (1, 3) are connected by a web (5), the pipes being plastics and the pipe (1) larger in dia. and with a watertight wall as compared with the smaller permeably walled pipe (3). Pref. the smaller pipe (3) should be walled in open cell foamed plastics. It may include a pressure roof wall (6) with numerous perforations (7) which in this case are surrounded by the porous foamed plastics casing (8).
