The prepn. of an isoxazolyl imidazolodinone of formula (I) comprises reacting an isoxazollurea of formula (II) with ozone and reducing the oxidized intermediate. In the formulas, R is C3-6 branched alkyl or C1-6 haloalkyl contg. 1-3 halogen atoms; R1 is C1-3 alkyl; and R2 and R3 are each H, phenyl, benzyl or C1-7 alkyl. Pref. R is alpha- branched alkyl, esp. tBu; and R1 is Me. The reaction is conducted pref. in a water-immiscible solvent, and the reduction is carried out pref. with a C1-4 dialkyl sulfide, esp. DMS. (I) are used as herbicides.
