PURPOSE:To make it possible to detect the remainder of steel balls, by forming a narrow groove having a predetermined depth in a detecting bar, corresponding to a passage in a steel holder through which the steel balls pass, and by introducing steel balls into an array of grooves in a retainer under vacuum suction force. CONSTITUTION:Steel balls (c) is introduced by gravitational falling due to the inclination of a passage 2' in a steel ball holder 2 through which steel balls (c) pass, and by vacuum suction effected from below through a hole 16' in a push rod 16 and a hole 20' in an auxiliary push rod 20. Then the push rod 16 is lowered by a cylinder to return a retainer (b) to its original position. At this time steel balls (c) which have missed entering into an array of grooves (b') in the retainer (b), remains in the holder 2. The remaining balls (c) make into contact with a detecting bar 8. Then, the remaining steel balls (c) are sucked into the detecting bar 8 so that the remainder of steel balls may be detected, thereby it is possible to prevent defective articles from being mixed into nondefective articles.
