Substituted beta -ethenyl and beta -ethynyl benzeneethanamine compounds of structrue (I) in which X is hydrogen or hydroxy; and R is ethenyl or ethynyl; are potent, irreversible inhibitors of mammalian dopamine- beta -hydroxylase. Included are pharmaceutical compositions and methods for using these compounds to inhibit DH, and processes and intermediates used in preparing active compounds.
