MICROBIOLOGICAL CONVERSION OF SULFUR-CONTAINING HARMFUL SUBSTANCE IN EXHAUST GAS

PURPOSE: To make harmful gases non-polluting in spite of a low concn. and to recover generated compds. by passing exhaust gases through a packing material which is covered with immobilized microorganisms and is held always in a wet sate and neutralizing the oxidized harmful materials dropping from the packing material. CONSTITUTION: Sulfur-contg. waste water is biologically degradated in a cleaning device 2. The sulfur bacteria generated in this cleaning device 2 are immobilized to the packing material and are introduced into a packed reactor 4. The bacteria are held always in the wet state therein. The waste gas is introduced by a conduit 5 into a reactor 4 where sulfuric acid is formed by the bacteria. This sulfuric acid dissolves into the dropping liquid and gathers at the bottom 6 of the reactor 4. An alkali liquid is added to the soln. contg. this acid in the reactor 7 and a salt is formed. This salt is sent to a reactor 8 and is converted to an insoluble crystal by addition of the milk of lime thereto. This insoluble crystal is stored in a storage place 9.
