The invention provides a method of extracting extractive component from a fluid containing at least one extractive component (e.g. a polymer cement containing impurities), said method comprising: passing a first fluid containing at least one extractive component to a vessel; passing an extraction fluid (e.g. an aqueous medium) to said vessel, thereby creating a two-phase two-layer system wherein the first fluid and the extraction fluid are discrete first fluid and extraction fluid layers and the two-phase system has a first fluid/extraction fluid interface; agitating the two-phase system at a rate wherein the first fluid layer and the extraction fluid layer remain as substantially discrete layers; providing a means for communication between said first fluid layer and said extraction fluid layer; extracting said at least one extractive component from the first fluid layer into the extraction fluid layer; stopping agitation; and recovering from the first fluid layer a fluid containing a reduced concentration of extractive component.
