PURPOSE:To efficiently densify a compact and obtain the compact without any internal defects by providing a layer of a powdery mixture having a high reaction propagation rate near an ignition point in locally igniting the powdery mixture of a metal with a nonmetal in a mold and simultaneously carrying out synthesis and forming. CONSTITUTION:A powdery mixture 10 of a metal (e.g., titanium) with a nonmetal (e.g., boron) is inserted into a mold 7 and a layer 11 of a powdery mixture having a composition different from that of the powdery mixture 10 and higher reaction propagation rate than that of the powdery mixture 10 is provided between the powdery mixture 10 and an ignition electrode 9. The interior of the mold 7 is then evacuated to ignite the powdery mixture layer 11 with the ignition electrode 9 while pressurizing the interior of the mold with a compression spring 6. Thereby, the synthetic reaction is advanced in the manner of self propagation to simultaneously carry out synthesis and forming of an inorganic compound and afford a compact of the inorganic compound. As a result, since the powdery mixture layer 11 is provided, the resultant sample can be ignited at an optional area and pressure can be effectively applied. |
