The metal powder has the compsn. 15-35 (pref. 20-30) % Cr, 0.05-3 (pref. 0.1-2)% Mn, 0.05-5 (pref. 0.1-4)%Mo, 0.1-3 (pref. 01.-2.9)%C, 0.1-3 (pref. 0.5-2)%Si; 2-15 (pref. 3-10)% Al and balance Fe and has a specific surface of more than 200 sq.cm./g. and pref. a non-spherical particle shape. A corrosion protection layer is produced on finned walls and superheater tubes, exposed to surface temps. above 400 deg.C in sulphur-contg. hot gases in combustion units, by depositing atomised metal powder using an autogenous flame spray torch at a fuel gas flow rate of 1000-3000 /pref. 1500-25000) Nl/hr.
