PURPOSE:To provide the subject compound in a high yield by reacting acetaldehyde with methanol in the presence of an acid catalyst and subsequently purifying the obtained crude reaction solution through three steps while the water content in a reaction solution distilled out from the overhead of a dehydration tower is controlled to a specific value. CONSTITUTION:Acetaldehyde 1-1 is reacted 3-3 with methanol 2-2 in the presence of an acid catalyst until the reaction reached an equilibrium composition and the produced water is first removed from the obtained crude reaction solution as the bottom product of a dehydration tower 4-4. The unreacted aldehyde is removed from the overhead product as the overhead product of the next distillation tower 5-5 and the unreacted methanol is further removed from the bottom product as a bottom product by a continuous or batchwise distillation method 6-6. The subject compound is separated as an azeotropic mixture thereof with the methanol from the overhead. When the above-mentioned processes are performed the water content in the reaction solution distilled out from the overhead of the dehydration tower 4-4 is controlled within 1wt.% to inhibit the production of high boiling point impurities, thereby obtaining the subject compound in high selectivity. |
