A set of pieces for forming a recreational, educational or decorative assembly of spherical elements such as a building game or a crystallographic or mathematical model is disclosed. The set is useful for forming an assembly of spherical elements having a uniform diameter and arranged in a cubic, hexagonal or mixed lattice, and each sphere in an assembly consists of a central core element (1) surrounded by four or five 'shell' elements (3) that each define a spherical surface portion and are complementary such that they form a complete spherical surface with the other adjacent 'shell' elements. Each of the 'shell' elements is provided both with a connecting means on the inner surface (7) and with a number of connecting means on the outer surface (10). Spheres may thus be constructed and assembled using an intermediate connecting piece (12) with an inner opening (18) and notches (14).
