An electronic automated game line mat (10) device secured directly over a playing surface designed to detect surface contact and provide electrical contact signals to an output device. The electronic automated game line mat (10) is a very thin switch apparatus used to distinguish contact within a defined in-bounds section and out-of-bounds section of a playing field such as a tennis court. The in-bounds and out-of-bounds sections of the automated game line mat (10) are further divided into a plurality of in-bound grids (33) and out-of-bounds grids (35) for identifying approximate contact location.
