PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To hardly cause side reaction and obtain the subject compound useful as an inhibitor of xanthin oxidases in high yield at a low cost by cyanating a 2-phenylthiazole derivative in the presence of a specific transition metallic catalyst. SOLUTION: (A) A compound represented by formula I [R<1> is H or a (substituted) 1-10C alkyl; R<2> is a 1-6C alkoxy, OH, amino, a mono- or a disubstituted 1-5C alkylamino; R<3> is H, a (substituted) 1-6C alkyl or a (substituted) phenyl; X is a halogen or an eliminable group] is reacted with (C) a compound represented by the formula MCN (M is an alkali metal or trimethylsilyl) in the presence of (B) a catalytic amount of a nickel or a palladium complex [e.g. tetrakis(triphenyphosphine)nickel], e.g. at 0-150 deg.C, preferably 20-100 deg.C temperature to afford a compound represented by formula II. |
