The improvements consist in forming, in the lower support 1 of the fold-down guard rail, a pair of guides 8 which fit into respective guide tubes 9 suitably secured to the frame 10 of the spring mattress under the corresponding longitudinal member 7 thereof, each guide tube 9 having a radial conduit 15, preferably centred and oriented downwards, in which there is a stud 16 actuated by a cam 17 extended into an actuating lever 18 so that said pin 16 causes locking of the guide 8 in the chosen position therefor, both in the operating position of the guard rail and in the retracted position thereof, said guides 8 being kept permanently associated with the corresponding guide tubes 9 through the existence in the inner, free end thereof of a rocking stop 14 which, from a position axial with the actual guide 8 corresponding to the assembly, tends automatically to rock, reaching, under gravity, a stable locking position. <IMAGE>
