The sensor (41) has an external voltage powered sensor (30) to generate a signal. A supply earth terminal is provided to which a supply earth lead (34) can be connected. The device also has a signal earth terminal to which a signal earth lead (33) can be connected. A correction circuit (37) is provided in the sensor (30). The correction circuit (37) measures the voltage drop across the supply earth lead via the signal earth lead when the supply earth lead and the signal earth lead are connected. The signal can be corrected according to the voltage drop. Preferably the correction circuit has a difference output stage (38). The sensor (30) may be formed together with the correction circuit (37) in an integrated circuit.
