The spindle mower (1) has at least one rotary mounted blade roller (10) which can be brought into drive connection with at least one rotary element of the running gear (4) via a running gear transmission with an associated running gear freewheel. At least one drive motor can be brought into drive connection with the blade roller by means of a motor transmission (24). The mower comprises a running gear, running wheels (5) and the rotary mounted blade roller which can be brought into drive connection with at least one wheel of the running gear by means of a running gear transmission with a free wheel mechanism. A battery powered electric motor may alternatively or additionally be brought into connection with the blade roller by means of a motor transmission equipped with a separate freewheel mechanism. As a result of the separate freewheel mechanism, it is possible to automatically switch to the drive type which produces the fastest rotation of the blade roller.
