APOPTOSIS INHIBITING EMODIN PURIFIED FROM PLEUROPTERUS CILINERVIS AND A METHOD FOR PURIFYING THE SAID COMPOUND

An apoptosis-inhibiting compound isolated from Pleuropterus cilinervis and a method for isolating the same compound are provided to prevent and treat diseases caused by increase of apoptosis including inflammation disease, AIDS(acquired immune deficiency syndrome), neurodegenerative disease, ischemic disease including cerebral apoplexy and liver disease by toxic substances such as alcohol. A pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating disease caused by increase of apoptosis comprises the extract of Pleuropterus cilinervis or emodin isolated from Pleuropterus cilinervis. The method for isolating the emodin isolated from Pleuropterus cilinervis comprises the steps of: (1) extracting Pleuropterus cilinervis with methanol, concentrating the methanol extract of Pleuropterus cilinervis under reduced pressure, and extracting the concentrate with ethylacetate to prepare the ethylacetate extract; (2) dissolving the concentrated ethylacetate extract in methanol, and subjecting the solution to gel filtration chromatography; and (3) subjecting the active fraction of step(2) to HPLC(high performance liquid chromatography), removing solvent with a vacuum dryer, and freeze-drying the solvent-removed solution.
