This invention provides liquid crystalline compounds, which are stable against heat, light and the like, can exhibit a nematic phase in a broad temperature range, have low viscosity, have proper optical anisotropy, and proper elastic constants K₃₃ and K₁₁, wherein K₃₃: bending modulus of elasticity and K₁₁: splay modulus of elasticity, and further have a proper negative permittivity anisotropy and excellent compatibility with other liquid crystalline compounds. There are also provided a liquid crystalline composition using this liquid crystalline compound and a liquid crystal display element using this liquid crystalline composition. The liquid crystalline compounds are represented by formulae (a) to (b): (a) (b) (c) (d) wherein, for example, Ra and Rb each independently represent a straight chain alkyl or a straight chain alkoxy; rings A¹, A², B and C each independently represent trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z¹¹, Z¹², Z², and Z³ each independently represent a single bond or alkylene; and one of X₁ and X₂ represents fluorine and the other represents chlorine.
