A reformer is provided to control the generation amount of hydrogen in accordance with a power generating capacity required by an electric mechanism and maintain a high hydrogen generating efficiency in spite of an increase in the generation amount of hydrogen, a method for controlling the reformer is provided, and a reformer having a plurality of reforming catalyst layers capable of being individually exchangeable is provided. A reformer(100) comprises: a cylindrical burner(105) having an internal space(107) into which combustion fuel flows, and a plurality of nozzles(108A,108B) for spraying a flame(160) to the circumference by ejecting the combustion fuel that has been flown into the internal space to the outside; a plurality of reforming catalyst layers(120A,120B) disposed in the circumference of the burner in a way that the flame sprayed from the nozzles reach the reforming catalyst layers; a nozzle closing unit for opening only some nozzles selected from the plurality of nozzles and closing the rest of the nozzles, or opening all nozzles; a combustion fuel supply unit for supplying combustion fuel into the internal space of the burner; a power generating fuel supply unit for supplying power generating fuel to some of the reforming catalyst layers selected from the plurality of reforming catalyst layers, or supplying the power generating fuel to all reforming catalyst layers; and a controller(150) for controlling the nozzle closing unit and the power generating fuel supply unit that are linked to each other, thereby allowing the flame to be sprayed onto only the reforming catalyst layers to which the power generating fuel has been supplied in the plurality of reforming catalyst layers. Further, the plurality of reforming catalyst layers contain pipe typed containers and reforming catalyst material in the pipe typed containers. |
