The method involves actuating a set of controlling units and elements by a piston (2) of a rotary piston expander engine, where extra energy is not required from the outer side of the engine. Eccentric (8) of the piston with side surfaces rests on side surfaces of a housing (1) inside of the engine, and formed as a smooth rotary valve through the surface areas such that openings in the side surfaces are transverse during the rotation of the piston through which a medium flow takes place to a working chamber of the engine. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for controlling medium change of a rotary piston expander engine.
