In electric discharge apparatus for effecting chemical reactions in gases, the gaseous reaction products are removed through a nozzle at a speed not less than the speed of sound so as to reduce the temperature of these products. In the apparatus shown, the anode 7 is of platinum and the cathode 8 which contains the nozzle is of tantalum or tungsten. Silver, copper, brass or steel may be used for either electrode. Several cathodes, each with a nozzle, may be provided, and the anode may also contain a nozzle. The anode is supported in a block 22 of insulating material which has an annular recess 23 to provide a longer electrical path across that end of the vessel. The electrodes are liquid cooled, e.g. by circulating water or sodium. The electric discharge is of the arc type, the anode being moved initially into contact with the cathode and then withdrawn. A.C. or D.C. may be used. The nozzle is preferably of the convergent/divergent type and suitable dimensions are given. Reactions specified are the production of nitric oxide from air, oxygen-enriched air or from streams of nitrogen and oxygen ; hydrazine from nitrogen and hydrogen, ammonia, ammonia and hydrogen or ammonia and nitrogen; hydrogen peroxide from water vapour or water vapour and oxygen; sulphur monoxide from sulphur vapour and oxygen ; and hydroxylamine from water vapour and ammonia. Operation may be at atmospheric pressure or above and the reaction vessel may be at a temperature of 30 to 120‹C.
