A self-propelled compost turner has a pair of front driven wheels 16 and a frame defining a longitudinal passageway between them. A cylindrical drum 38 extends transversely across the passageway and carries projections 45, 46 for picking up the compost, passing it over the drum and inverting it. Plates 51 project forwardly and rearwardly from the drum supports 40, and are pivotable about vertical axes to vary the sizes of the entrance to and exit from the passageway. The projections 45, 46 are angled to throw the compost towards the centre of the passageway, and with the aid of the rearwardly projecting plates 51 a heaped window is formed. The drum supports 40 may be raised by a hydraulic ram (42, Fig. 3, not shown). The drum is chain driven by an engine 18, and the wheels 16 are driven through hydraulic transmission so that the speeds of the wheels and drum can be varied independently. Rear steering wheels (17, Fig. 2, not shown) are also provided. The machine may also include a tank for water, deodorant or other additive for the compost.</p> |
