A process for the production of a 2,6-dialkylphenol comprises alkylating phenol with an alkene in the presence, as catalyst, of a metal phenate prepared by the reaction of phenol with a metal; the preparation of the catalyst and the alkylation both being carried out in the presence of a sterically hindered phenol. Sterically hindered phenols specified include 2,21- methylene - bis - (4 - methyl- 6 - tert .- butylphenol), 4,4 - methylene - bis- (2,6-di-tert. - butyl phenol), 2,21 - methylene bis - (4 - methyl - 6 - methylcyclohexylphenol) 4 - methyl - 2,6 - di - alpha - methyl benzyl phenol and mixtures thereof. Metals specified include aluminium and iron. Products obtained include 2,6-di-tert.-butyl phenol and 2,6-dialpha-methyl benzyl phenol.
