A first dye is applied to each of a series of hanks of yarn S (one being shown) from the upper or both of two parallel vertically spaced perforated tubes 15 and 40 passing through the hanks during rotation of the hanks around said tubes (by means of a beam 17 rotatable about tube 157 to completely dye said hanks, the rotation of the hanks is then halted and a second dye is applied from the lower tube 40 to thereby dye only the lower portion of the hanks, the hanks are then partially rotated and a third dye is applied from the lower tube. The perforations in tube 40 may be of varying size and arranged along horizontal plane through said tube. A plurality of series of hanks may be placed on a plurality of parallel sets of tubes 15 and 40 and additional dye tubes 40 may be provided between adjacent hanks (Fig. 1). The dye is continuously recirculated from a bath beneath the hanks via a three-way valve to two manifolds (30, 42, Figure 1) respectively supplying tubes 15 and 40, each said manifold being tapered towards each end thereof. The tube 40 may be positioned so that approximately 1/3 of the circumference of a hank extends below said tube. |
