Benzimidazole oxides of the formula wherein R is a five-membered heterocyclic radical containing nitrogen and sulphur and R 1 and R 2 are each hydrogen or halogen atoms or C 1-5 alkyl, phenyl, halophenyl, thienyl, C 1-5 alkoxy, C 1-5 alkylthio, phenoxy, or phenylthio groups, provided that when both R 1 and R 2 are other than halogen at least one of R 1 and R 2 is hydrogen, are obtained by treating nitroaniline compounds of the formula with a strong base in a solvent capable of dissolving the base. The o-nitroanilines used above are obtained by treating chloronitrobenzenes with methylamine derivatives R-CH 2 -NH 2 . |
