A motor vehicle has an adjustable steering column assembly including a release member 32, for allowing adjustment of the tilt of the steering wheel, which is operable manually or, on opening of a door 26 adjacent to the steering wheel, through an actuator mechanism which is sensitive to opening of the door and produces axial displacement of a member 42 which extends between the door assembly and the release member. The steering wheel is carried by an upper column portion 6 which is pivotable about a transverse vehicle axis 8, is biased towards its uppermost position by a pair of springs (24) (Figs. 3, 4, not shown), extending between the column portions 4 and 6 and is held in one of a number of incremental positions of tilt by one of a pair of spring-biased latch members 10, 12 which have notches alternately engageable with pins 20, 22 of the lower column portion 4 and which are releasable by movement of a release element 32 towards the vehicle driver by a manual control arm 14. The release element 32 is also actuated, thereby allowing the springs 24 to raise the steering wheel to its uppermost position, when the door 26 is opened by a sheathed Bowden cable 42 having one end connected to a pin 44 on the release element 32 and the other end provided with a reciprocable plunger 46 movable in the end 36 of the sheath 38 by the end 68 of an arm 52. The arm 52 is connected to, and rotates about a pin 56 with, an arm 54 having a serpentine slot 62 engaged by a pin 64 of the door hinge 66. The arms 52 and 54 are inter-connected by a pair of spring-loaded interengaging ramped ribs (76) and slots (78) (Figs. 7, 8, not shown), which disengage when a spring 48 on the plunger 46 is compressed permitting the spring to return the plunger to its original position and the latch 10 to hold the steering wheel in its uppermost position. When the door is closed the ribs (76) and slots (78) re-engage. |
