[Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Metallic foil laminates, e.g. aluminium foilpaper laminates, are bonded with an adhesive composition comprising a mixture of a natural or synthetic bentonite clay and an aqueous emulsion or solution of a vinyl polymer binder component, the latter being either (1) a vinyl polymer which contains at least 0À5% by weight of units derived from at least one monomer having a polar functional group or (2) a vinyl polymer devoid of polar functional groups in conjunction with a minor porportion by weight, with respect to said vinyl polymer, of a watersoluble polymer which contains polar functional groups, the minimum concentration of said water-soluble polymer being 1À0% based on the weight of total resin solids in the adhesive composition; the amount of bentonite clay being from 0À1 to 10% by weight based on the weight of total resin solids in the adhesive composition, and the adhesive composition being substantially pigment-free. The following binders are used in the examples (a) vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer, (b) styrene/butyl acrylate/acrylic acid copolymer, (c) a copolymer of vinyl acetate, vinyl ester of C 10 alpha-branched saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid, and acrylic acid, (d) vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate/N-methylolacrylamide copolymer, (e) styrene/butyl acrylate/hydroxyethyl acrylate copolymer, (f) styrene/butyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer, (g) styrene/butadiene/acrylic acid copolymer, (h) ethyl acrylate/acrylonitrile/N-methylolacrylamide copolymer, (i) vinyl acetate/ethyl acrylate copolymer plus polyvinyl alcohol, and (j) styrene/butyl acrylate copolymer plus methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer or the ammonium salt of styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer or acid converted, pregelatinized waxy maize starch or gum arabic. The bentonite clays used in the examples are synthetic sodium magnesium lithium fluorosilicate clay, a beneficiated naturally occurring sodium magnesium lithium fluorosilicate clay, a hectorite clay modified with an organic surface active agent, and a synthetic hectorite clay. The adhesive compositions may also include other ingredients, such as defoamers, e.g. mixtures of metallic soaps; preservatives, e.g. phenyl mercuric acetate; thickeners, e.g. methyl cellulose; lubricants ; plasticizers; and antioxidants. |
