1,189,256. Catalytic hydration of olefins. HIBERNIA CHEMIE G.m.b.H. 30 May, 1968 [30 May, 1967], No. 25994/68. Heading C2C. Olefins having 2 to 4 carbon atoms are catalytically hydrated by a catalyst carrier impregnated with phosphoric acid, the phosphoric acid carried out in liquid form by the reaction products being separated after leaving the reaction zone and returned to the catalyst carrier by a pipe of non-corroding material directly inside or directly outside the reaction chamber. Phosphoric acid is entrained in the gaseous state by the gases leaving the reactor, but this acid is present in only a small amount corresponding to a partial pressure which is below the saturation point and consequently gives rise to practically no corrosion in downstream apparatus. The contact reactor is lined with carbon bricks. The catalyst carriers may in addition to SiO 2 contain up to 25% of other oxides, such as Al 2 O 3 , Fe 2 O 3 and TiO 2 , while avoiding coating following parts of apparatus. |
